Dr. T is a 44 year old dentist who came to see me because she had some old amalgam restorations (silver fillings) that she said were about 30 years old and she had a very specific request. She wanted to have, “nice, A2 coloured bonded Empress crowns to strengthen the posterior teeth with some tints to highlight the ridges and increased chroma in the occlusal so that the crowns would esthetically blend into her smile”. Hows that for a specific request?!!
So after reviewing the various treatment modalities with Dr. T and answering her questions about other options, she decided to go ahead with direct composite bonding with an eye to full coverage crown restorations in the future if the bonding did not hold up or if she required any root canals.
In one appointment we removed the old amalgam fillings, decay and stain. We used 4 different types of composites (white filling material) and 3 tints to create the final result. Dr. T loved the final result and these fillings felt so good, that 15 years later she has left them as is and never proceeded with the crowns.

Nothing. They both describe the same dental restoration. Dentists use the term crown. In explaining what a crown is to a patient a dentist will often describe it as being similar to a person wearing a cap on their head. When we put a cap on our head it covers the top, front, back and left and right sides of your head. A dental crown is a hollow restoration that slips over a tooth and covers the same 5 surfaces: the chewing surface (top), front, back and 2 sides of the tooth. Crowns are used when a tooth is broken, chipped, cracked, or heavily filled, or has a very large cavity. The crown can be made of metal(gold), porcelain, zirconia or acrylic. Your prosthodontist or dentist will recommend which crown material is best for you.

Your prosthodontist or dentist will recommend which crown material is best for you. Veneers are basically half a crown and they are glued onto the front of a tooth as a thin facing (like an artificial nail is glued on). Veneers are used to subtly change the shape and colour of teeth. As thinner, more delicate restorations than crowns, veneers are usually recommended for the front teeth only. They are very kind to the tooth because you don’t have to grind a tooth down to glue a veneer on. Veneers can be made in a dental lab out of porcelain or built-up chair side with filling material by your prosthodontist or dentist.
