This conservative treatment option is ideally suited for patients who like the shape and position of their teeth but wish to improve the colour.
There are two techniques available:
1. At-home tooth whitening using custom-made bleaching trays made by a dentist and a peroxide product. Some advantages include lower costs and the elimination of the need for dental visits to continue treatment.
2. Teeth whitening in a clinic with a light source and a stronger peroxide solution. Teeth can be dramatically lightened in less than 60 minutes and can be combined with other dental appointments.
Unfortunately not. Tooth whitening agents act on the enamel and dentin of your tooth to remove stains and “bleach” the outer surface. The material that crowns and fillings are made of are quite dense so they do not allow the whitening agent to penetrate the outer surface to lighten them. The only way to lighten a crown or a filling is to have your prosthodontist or dentist try and polish them first and if that still doesn’t lighten them enough then you would have to have them replaced.
So, this is a very important question I ask all my patients when I am doing aesthetic crowns, veneers or bonding for them.
“Are you thinking about lightening your teeth? If so, then you need to lighten your teeth first and then I will match the colour of the restorations to your lightened teeth. If you try and whiten your teeth after I make the crowns, veneers or bonding, then the restorations won’t whiten and they will look different from your whitened teeth.”
Yes if used properly. Baking soda acts like very fine grit sandpaper to your teeth so it removes stains from the outer surface of your teeth by being abrasive. The enamel on our teeth is the hardest substance in our bodies so using some baking soda to brush it shouldn’t harm your teeth. However, if you have porcelain veneers, crowns, white fillings or cosmetic bonding then repeated use of baking soda can scratch and dull the surface of these restorations.
The best way to clean these restorations and maintain them is to have your prosthodontist or dentist professionally polish them
